Our story
Dentistry as a way to change a life
Bek-a-Buddy began with a simple observation in a South African dental chair: the people who most need treatment are often the people least able to pay for it, and the cost of going without is far bigger than a tooth.
Why it matters
Untreated dental disease is one of the most visible forms of inequality in this country. It shows up in job interviews, in classrooms, in relationships, and at the dinner table.
People with dental pain eat less, sleep badly and withdraw. People with missing front teeth are quietly filtered out of work they are qualified for. This is not vanity. It is health, income and belonging.
We are not a cosmetic dentistry programme. We fund treatment that restores function, comfort and confidence — and we do it one person at a time, in public, with their consent.
How it works
Nomination
Anyone can nominate — including yourself. We require consent from the nominated person before anything is published.
Vetting and assessment
We verify need, then a partner practice near the buddy performs a clinical assessment and quotes a treatment plan.
Sponsorship
The case is published with a funding goal. Individuals and businesses sponsor any portion of it.
Treatment and reporting
Funds are paid directly to the practice against the plan. Sponsors receive progress updates through to completion.
Transparency
- Funds are never paid to a patient in cash — always to the treating practice.
- Every published case carries a dentist-quoted plan and a fixed goal.
- Surplus funds move to the next buddy only with sponsor permission.
- Buddies control how much of their story and identity is shared.
Our philosophy
Dignity is the design constraint. Nobody here is a before-and-after photograph. We tell stories the way the person would tell them, we ask before we publish, and we make it easy for a stranger to do something genuinely useful with R250.
